Mariko Mori's Dream Temple
March-June 1999 | Deitch Projects/Fondazione Prada | Tokyo and Milan
The Elumenati's David McConville was the technical director and system integrator of the "Dream Temple", an immersive installation by Japanese conceptual artist Mariko Mori. Inspired by the eighth-century "Temple of Dreams" in the Buddhist monastery of Horyuji, the heart of the installation was a custom 3-meter full-hemisphere projection display complete with a proprietary head-tracked 3D audio enviroment. After premiering at Fondazione Prada (Milan, Italy), the Dream Temple traveled to Rooseium (Malmo, Sweden) and the Royal Academy's Apocalypse show (London, England). The project was an international effort funded by Fondazione Prada, with technical components and content designed by SGI-Tokyo (computer hardware), Shiseido (computer graphics), Sony (proprietary head-tracked 3D audio system and CG rendering), Alternate Realities Corporation (custom 3 meter dome theater), and Fondazione Prada (architectural design implementation).
