The OZ Museum is dedicated to all things OZ, offering an experience that attracts visitors from around the globe. We collaborated on a custom interactive that brings the Wicked Witch’s Crystal Ball to life for museum guests on a 75cm GeoDome Globe. WorldViewer’s gesture-driven interactivity lets them feel like they’re part of the 1939 MGM movie The Wizard of Oz.
We customized the globe with a folded OmniFocus lens, allowing us to mount the projector horizontally for a low profile that fits into an alcove with the Wicked Witch herself. Next to the Witch stands a Flying Monkey, where we placed a hidden camera. Guests activate it by waving their hands in a magic-wand style, triggering the camera feed to show up on the globe – so the Witch can see the guests in her Crystal Ball, much like Dorothy. We also designed a touchscreen user interface featuring floating bubbles like the ones in the movie, with custom-created representations of characters in both the film and the original book (written by L. Frank Baum with illustrations by W. W. Denslow – now open-source for public use).
This unique design required a custom frame, enclosure and ventilation system. Our OmniFocus 30330 projection system lights the globe with 6,000 lumens at 3.6 Mpix resolution. An Elumenati IG configured with WorldViewer runs the system, with 2.0 audio.
