Migrations Exhibit at San Diego Zoo – Custom Solution

The Migrations immersive exhibit is a centerpiece in the newly launched Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. A dual-projector OmniFocus solution fills the domed ceiling with projected insects as they fly above visitors’ heads, and a tall, dynamically lit meadow scene stretches around the edges of the space to create a “bug’s-eye”view. Visitors see migrating butterflies, flashing fireflies, and other creatures as the setting cycles from day to night. Spatial audio and the scents of flowers and grass make visitors feel they are truly part of the fascinating lives of insects.

The 7m dome features our dual OmniFocus 30350 projection system, blending two 4K lasers in a cross-cove configuration that concentrates resolution in the area of interest. Our folded lenses enabled a low-profile installation ideal for the unique installation conditions. The experience is driven by WorldViewer and runs on a single PC – a customized rack mount Elumenati image generator. The system is integrated into a comprehensive content management system that powers the more than 20 Basecamp exhibits.   The content was built by a third party in the Unity game engine, and we used SuperCubeMapper to port it into WorldViewer.
